DIAMOND ROCK |
We had a great sail from Roseau, Dominica to Fort De France in Martinique It was a 7.5 hour sail, going an average of 6.4 knots. Along the way, we sailed by the 'Diamond Rock'.
We anchored right in from of the Fort St-Louis next to the city beach and park. The fort is currently a naval base. If you want to visit it, you must go with a guide.
The dinghy dock is I think the biggest I've ever seen and is extremely well maintained. The only issue is that kids play on the dock and jump in and out of the dinghies docked there. One day, I saw a dinghy that had been sunk. My advice, is go out early and come back before the kids get out of school.
Guides say that there's a nice pedestrian walkway in town. The street is called 'Central Rue De la Republique'. I was expecting cute shops & cafes. There were lots of spices to sell, but not necessarily local. I was disappointed in the fact that most stores were cheap stores and some resembled Dollar stores.
I enjoyed the fish market as it had a big choice.
THAT WAS A HUGE TUNA ! |
There is a huge outdoor market called 'Spice Market', in fact there are two that I found. Here, you can get all the fresh fruit and veggies along with spices and crafts. Do not miss this great market !
DOG SAUCE, PINEAPPLE JAM, VANILLA BEAN |
Around town in Fort De France:
The supermarket named 'Leader Price', had very interesting selection of food:
RUM IN A BOX |
KID SIZE JUICE BOXES THAT CONTAINS WHITE WINE |
CANADIAN SANDWICH SLICES ?
|
THERE IS A TOWN IN MARTINIQUE CALLED DILLON WHERE THEY MAKE AGRICOLE RUM |
1. The grocery store called 'Leader price' is on the main drag near where you cleared in (Fort De France).
2. To visit Fort St-Louis. From the dinghy dock, cross the street and go to the park in Fort de France, there's a tourist booth. They will tell you when you can do a guided visit.
3. Spice Market is between Rue Victor Hugo and Rue Antoine Siger.
